WHY BEHAVIOR CHANGE?

Low Hanging Fruit
The average teacher, student and staff member are so ingrained in the daily routine that energy and environmental conservation opportunities go unnoticed. OCCUPANT BEHAVIOR IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF ENERGY WASTE.
We will establish a Change in Position approach on an educational facility. A behavioral modification program is aimed at increasing awareness of the energy inefficiencies within a facility. The goal of our program is to identify and modify behavioral patterns of building occupants as they relate to both energy consumption and environmental issues.
OUR PROGRAM will EMPOWER occupants to become energy managers by educating and equipping students, staff, teachers, maintenance, custodial, administration and parents regarding environmental management. Our program focuses on creating self-sustainable self-reproducible energy management teams per campus. Energy Management is a big focus of the program, but promoting recycling and water conservation are equally important. A successful program will save from 5-20% of their energy budget and most of our programs have paid for themselves in less then 6 months.
We can implement this program in three different ways:
1. Staff Program- Empower energy management representatives to initiate within the facility.
2. Beta Program - Implement a complete or partial program within a select number of facilities.
3. Complete Program - Implement a behavioral modification program at all levels and at all facilities.
Opportunities:
• Lights – 10% reduction will save 2% of kWh/year
• Computer Monitors - $10 to $20 per computer/year
• TV’s – Cost up to $1 a day to operate (assuming 8 hours)
• Smart Boards/Projectors – $0.08 -$0.12 per hour
• Thermostat Location – 1 degree = 1.5% change
• Plug Load – 19% of the total energy consumed within U.S. office buildings
• Open doors
• Water Waste – 60% water usage is irrigation
• Product Waste Recycling - The average person uses the equivalent of a 100-foot-tall Douglas fir tree in paper products each year
